Post-Coup Surge in Myanmar’s Rare Earth Exports to China


Since the 2021 coup, rare earth exports from Myanmar to China have surged fivefold to USD 3.6 billion, making Myanmar the largest supplier, accounting for over half of China’s imports. Rare earth mining sites in Kachin State doubled to 370, with ISP-Myanmar identifying 2,700 collection pits in Chipwi and Momauk townships, over 1,500 emerging post-coup.
