- ISP-Myanmar strongly condemns the coup d’état that occurred on February 1, 2021, and firmly asserts that there is no justification for such an action. Prior to this event, ISP-Myanmar had consistently voiced its opposition to any coup as a solution to political crises.
- The coup threatens to derail the nation’s progress at a crucial time when efforts should be focused on federalization and democratic reforms initiated after the political liberalization of 2010. Furthermore, this has exacerbated the already fragile civil-military relations, which have been in steady decline since 1958.
- We call for the immediate release of all individuals detained in connection with the February 1 coup, as well as the long-term political prisoners. Furthermore, we urge the authorities to refrain from using violence against protestors, to stop arresting individuals for protesting, and to cease any dismissals or threats against employees, particularly civil servants, participating in protests.
- To address the broader crises resulting from the coup and for the sake of the aspirations of the people including the future generations, for the advancement and building of democratic and federal union and for Myanmar’s dignity in the international community, ISP-Myanmar urgently calls for immediate political dialogue.
- Founded in 2016, ISP-Myanmar is an independent, non-partisan, and non-governmental think tank that promotes democratic leadership and public participation in public affairs to encourage a resilient and tolerant society.
